He assembled a big crowd last Saturday at the Rose Hill Stadium. The singer says he's tired of singing for others.
"I have decided to devote more time to composing and to gradually stop playback singing," says Sonu Nigam. After having spent so many years singing for Bollywood stars, Sonu Nigam wants
to distance himself from the film industry. Aged 27, Sonu Nigam has a very "star" look in his torn jeans and his blue top with a gold collar. In Mauritius thanks to Rhythm house, promoter of
musical events, he has given a concert at the Rose Hill Stadium on the 2nd of September 2000.
"Singing for movies does not inspire me as much anymore. The music director has already done everything for you. You just follow their instructions and that's all. I take 15 minutes to learn a song, I sing it, and I get paid. The satisfaction is infinitely greater when you have composed the song yourself," he says. He is in a hurry to renew the successes of Deewana, Mausam, and Jaan.
Discovered in the "Sa Re Ga Ma" show, the young man wants to broaden his horizons. For quite a few years already, Indian film producers have been after him, "I've finally accepted to sign for
2 films. I was waiting for a good script and a role that would suit me," he explains. The competition is hard at Bollywood, especially with the arrival of the new generation of actors.
Doesn't he fear failure?
"I am conscious about the difficulties of getting into Bollywood as an actor. I do not want to do a movie just because it looks like the next appropriate step. If after my first film, I discover that I have taken the wrong path, it's not a problem. At least, I'd have tried it," he says very realistically.
For the time being, Sonu dreams of turning west for singing "despite the fact that the Hindi language is a barrier in the way." The singer did not hide his relief when the interview was over: "After the concert on Saturday night, I am terribly tired. I'm bringing with me a nice souvenir: the public was so welcoming.
Mauritius is now on my list of favourite destinations. Few countries can pride themselves of the type of peaceful co-habitation of different communities. I appreciate Mauritius for that. And I will not wait for a long time before coming back." MESSAGE RECEIVED 100%!
