One looked forward to see SaReGaMa on Zee TV every Monday. Sonu stranger to the world as a brilliant singer and his popularity rose to world acclaim with this popular show. Now that this popular Indian star has retired from his position of anchoring the show he has moved on to perform worldwide.
Recently Musicurry learned that Sonu Nigam would perform in South Africa in aid of an organisation started by the South African Indian community more than 60 years ago. The Natal Indian Blind and Deaf Society which was by apartheid Legislation Limited to assisting Indians with sight and hearing problems, dropped the 'Indian' from it's title as the country moved towards democracy in the early nineties. The society assists all communities with self-help schemes, training programmes and welfare projects.
The society now is working on a project to develop a Braille Resource Centre in Durban, which will establish a library, which would be in tune with current affairs daily news and discussions transcribed in to Braille. The society also will arrange adult literacy classes for the hearing impaired in the province of KwaZulu Natal. Since the organisation works solely on donations the project requires a great deal of funding. Although many have helped by contributing to the project.
Sonu Nigam would perform at several stage shows to help this cause. Sonu is no stranger to social awareness and has time to time came froward to support the right causes if one recalls he also had sang a song related to Aids Awareness few years back. It's nice to know a singer with a golden heart.
