Sonu Nigam, the superstar

His pop albums sell millions of copies, his talents have earned him the admiration of fans well beyond the Indian subcontinent, and his clean-cut boyish good looks have made him a real heartthrob, especially among young women…

Sonu Nigam was born in Faridabad and brought up in Delhi. Son of Agam Kumar Nigam, a popular singer in North India, he was exposed to music since his early childhood.

He started singing when he was three. But it was at the age of 18, when he was discovered by the late business tycoon Gulshan Kumar of T-series, that things really took off for him with his first hit song "Aacha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyar". After Gulshan Kumar heard him sing a dummy for one of his films, he was quite impressed.

The hugely popular TV Show "Sa Re Ga Ma" also helped him by conferring on him a star status. It was indeed a platform to show himself and whatever he was capable of. He is still today a star of that famous TV show.

At the beginning of his career, Sonu Nigam had to sing cover versions of popular songs by Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey and others. In those days, he had to take up whatever was being offered to him in order to survive. He was even accused of tarnishing the image of the original singers! Today, many of his film songs have become super hits: "Taal", "Dil Se", "Pardes", "Aur Pyar Ho Gaya", "Border", "Refugee", only to name a few. And all his pop albums have hit the jackpot: "Kismet", "Jaan", "Deewana"…

Sonu has also acted in different movies : "Kaamchor", "Ustad Ki Ustad Se", "Hum Se Hai Zamana Taqdeer", "Betaab" and a few more. He is nowadays busy reading scripts of movies and is even considering a career in films.

Sonu Nigam spends a lot of time travelling abroad and doing concerts. He is right now in Mauritius and will be giving a concert on Saturday, September 2nd.

Respectful and courteous in everyday life, he is just like the image he projects on screen. A true family man, he prefers spending time at home, with a few friends, rather than attending parties.

There was a time when he was rushing about singing as many as 30 songs a day, trying to earn a living. His mode of transport in those days was a scooter. Today, he sings about one song a day and owns four cars.
