Off the record

Sonu Nigam finds it important that people should constantly be reminded that he not only has a fabulous voice with a wide range, but also that he uses it well. So his latest album, Deewana, serves the same purpose. A collection of eight songs composed by Sajid-Wajid, with lyrics by Faiz Anwar, the album is a plesant compilation. Some of the lyrics, specifically, are exceptional.

To begin with, the album falls in the category the rest of them do pure smooshy smush. All the songs are rendered in Nigam's dreamy voice, with slow, sensuous music that leaves you with stardust in your eyes and longing in your soul, among assorted other parts of the anatomy. Lyrics-wise, Is kadar pyar hai tumse is superb, as is Ye pehli mulaqat ki, which also has a waltzy flavour, thus making it slightly different. For those who cannot decide who they love more romance or Sonu Nigam this is the perfect buy.

Sonu Nigam's Deewana

How did you get the opportunity to compose for 'Jaan'?

We were already working on a number of albums, when Bhushan ji, Gulshan ji's son, called up and proposed that he was interested in doing an album with us. He explained the mood to us and the best part is that he himself has very good understanding of music. There were some songs where he just heard a few lines and immediately decided to record them. When we asked him if this music would sell, he just told us not to worry about the market, saying that good lyrics and good music always sell. It seldom happens that the owner of a music company, has a knack for music, and 'T.Series' is extremely fortunate that way.

How was the experience of working with Sonu Nigam?

See we have worked with Sonu before also. He started his career with us, singing 'Achha Sila Diya', for 'Bewafa Sanam', the music for which, had been composed by us. That was his first recording hit, so he has always been a good friend for us. The film was a big commercial hit, to every one's surprise and the music too did very well. At that time Sonu was very young and since then he has been our friend, so working with him was fun.
